Billboard top 5 rock chart: 1. fun. 2. The Lumineers 3. Phillip Phillips 4. Alex Clare 5. Ed Sheeran. The answer? Here it is: Disturbed, Slipknot, Godsmack and the Foo Fighters are on hiatus, Avenged Sevenfold and Five Finger Death Punch are in the middle of touring and writing (therefore not releasing any singles), Sevendust's record has not dropped yet, and Lamb of God's Randy Blythe is fighting manslaughter charges in the Czech. Anticipate real music to rise from the ashes as Device makes it debut, A7X and Sevendust drop new albums, Alice in Chains returns, and StoneSour completes their two part album. Call me a hater, I just like music made with actual musicians who play actual instruments who can write their own songs without their label dictating the band's direction. Rock on 2013

Well here's the sad truth...and I hate to say it! The truth is that big business controls the types of music and artists that get exposure and become popular.
The record industry is a $14 billion dollar business. The five major record labels; Sony, Universal, BMG, EMI and Time Warner dominate 85% of the market when it comes to sales of Compact Discs. Leaving only 15% for the hundreds of independent record labels and thousands of artists out there.... And when indies get too big or an artist starts making noise these major companies usually pick up the artist or label. This way they control the artist/label, get a percentage of the sales and keep competition to a minimum.

There's tons of Inde Artists...to me are very good...the key is exposure. So you wont really see or hear many of them.
Ever wonder why you hear the same songs on the radio all the time? It's because major record companies are paying radio stations thousands of dollars to play their records! That's why you rarely, if ever, hear independent music on commercial radio.

There are three companies that own most the radio stations in the US - EMMIS, Radio One and Clear Channel. Over the past two years the Clear Channel company has been on an acquisition binge, spending almost $30 billion on buying radio stations, concert venues and advertising companies. The company is building a "monopolistic multimedia empire" that has decreased competition, reduced consumer choice, and driven up ticket prices for concerts.....Sucks huh?
There are approximately 27,000 music titles released every year. Of the 7,000 "new" titles released every year by major labels less than 10% are profitable.

Major record labels sign only what they hope will sell, jumping on the latest trend and flooding the market with sound alikes.

Oh there is so much shit going on...and no one seems to care!No one has money or wants to risk putting their money where their mouth is promoting new music. So here we are stuck...excuse my rant.

This is just sickening. They are basically creating a music industry monopoly and it crushes of the hopes of people (like me) who want to work for a successful local music label. Now those dreams turn into nightmares because "local successful music labels" do not exist as long as the big 5 are money hungry.
