Rick Santorum has been on the offensive lately, but his target has not been Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney or even President Barack Obama. For the past week, Santorum has been using his campaign to take aim at an issue he feels to be the single most dangerous force in America today: Satanism in heavy metal. “If you listen to the radio today, many of these brand new, so-called heavy metal music bands like Black Sabbath, Venom, The WASP and Iron Maiden use satanic imagery to corrupt the minds of young people,” announced Santorum at a 10,000 dollar a plate sock-hop in Valdosta, Georgia on Thursday.

Santorum’s popularity in the polls has grown substantially since he began speaking out against metal and its assault on traditional values. He has spent much of the past week in the Midwest encouraging young people to stay away from metal artists and listen to performers like Michael W. Smith and Pat Boone. In a recent Gallup Poll, 87 percent of Republican voters think that the biggest problem in America today is “the demented bloodlust of teenagers caused entirely by heavy metal music.”

In the past, Santorum has accused heavy metal of being the cause of some of the worst crimes in American history including the attempt on the life of Ronald Reagan in 1981, 9/11 and the passage of Obama’s Health Care Bill. He stepped up his rhetoric in a speech on Wednesday when he implied that heavy metal is the cause of many forms of mental illness as well as lactose intolerance.

It’s probably not a coincidence that since he began his crusade against metal that his poll numbers have been surging upwards. Picking out a small and unique group, singling them out as “other” and using them to frighten the masses is a proud tradition in American politics. However, many commentators believe that his call for metal internment camps goes too far. Santorum has openly advocated the forced re-education of metalheads. They would be forced to endure 30 days of non-stop “values based” music that promotes the American way of life as well as the free market. In order to leave, they will have to sing the chorus to at least one Celine Dion song.

In response to Santorum’s metal onslaught, Mitt Romney officially denounced his earlier position of “tolerance towards all fans of extreme music”. This, in spite of the fact that GWAR played his inauguration as governor of Massachusetts back in 2003. But things have changed since 2003 and embracing heavy metal music is about as popular selling baby organs on Ebay or clubbing seals. Romney will need to begin pretending to be something else if he plans on facing Obama in the general election in November.

Rumor has it that that article is a hoax. Don't know for sure, but I saw that too and I've heard it was a spoof.

Amen Raven! Fuck that asshole. Its why I'm proud to be a Libertarian.

I couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous that was. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a ligitimate article, because republican politicians are kinda nuts like this to begin with.

This is just too fuckin rich; I'm sending this article to all my friends. They're going to be laughing their asses off.

EDIT: I also loved the first response on the website's comments. "1984 called, they want their controversial topic back."

I wouldn't be in the slightest surprised if it were real. Really, he doesn't believe that stuff, he's just saying what all the 'people' want him to say. I could be a politician and say we needed to ban the use of alcohol, not because of drunk drivers, but because it somehow causes more alien abductions. I know, that's completely irrelevant and a bunch of nonsense, but that's pretty much what would be coming out of that idiot's mouth either way.

Politicians don't tell the truth, they just say what everyone else wants them to say so that they actually believe they want the same thing.

Rick Santorum = moron

This reads like it came from The Onion...and wouldn't surprise me in the least if it did.

I'll listen to whatever music I please, Mr. Santorum. I'd like to see you stop me and my brothers & sisters in metal. There's a lot more of us than you think.

Yep, and it's just the fact that he's too stupid to actually notice that. He's just one of the idiots that can't see past the media whores that clog up the news nowadays. Metal is in hiding, and if he decides to poke the hornets' nest like that.... Well, he's gonna get a lot more than he bargained for.

And even if it were a hoax, I can guarantee you that if he actually read that he would probably do that anyways. In his mind he would be thinking, "Well, it is what the people want. I may sound like an idiot, but I already am one and I'm just saying what they want me to say so I can wriggle my way into office."

People it's a hoax. Dont get your panties in a wad. Yes he's a cook, and I'd never vote for a radical like him, but this is an elaborate hoax that only the gullible and naive would believe. People who believe this are the kind of people who read something off the internet ONE time and instantaneously believe it without doing any kind of background checks.

I knew it! It sounded too outrageous to be real. It was that line about Celine Dion that gave it all away. LOL

Still, I will listen to whatever I damn well want...be that heavy metal or Adele or opera. Politicians should be concerned with bettering the country & not turn it into "1984".

I kinda figured it was a hoax. I'm not surprised to be honest, but I wouldn't have been surprised if it were true either. Santorum is a radical moron. If it had been true he would have been treading on our 1st Amendment rights. We have to right to express ourselves however we want. Like Stef said, I'll listen to what I damn well want- whether it's hard rock/heavy metal or Taylor Swift; Musicals or Techno. And there's nothing that Rick Santorum can do about it

It's a pretty great hoax if you ask me. The fact that so many believed it shows how the population views the guy.

Yeah I had a feeling it was a fake. However, like I said even if it wasn't a fake and it was real, that still wouldn't have surprised me.

It was still a pretty damn good laugh though.
