At the Southern California stop of the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, Disturbed unlocked their Asylum and gave one blisteringly brilliant performance.

As a black curtain fell, the band took the stage, slowly tearing through the calculated impending instrumental chaos of "Remnants". An unsettling intro played on the giant video wall behind the band as frontman David Draiman ran center stage in unison with his on-screen escape. Instantly, Disturbed snapped into "Asylum". An avalanche of thrash riffing from guitarist Dan Donegan locked into the drum and bass steamroll from Mike Wengren and John Moyer. With the video in the background and the impenetrable, infectious instrumentation, Disturbed gained complete sensory control of the audience for the next hour-plus. Draiman sounded feral, focused, and flawless on the song's anthemic hook. While Donegan closed everything out with a breath-taking solo, it was clear that Disturbed had arrived with a vengeance.

"The Game" fell from a flurry of electronics into a slashing syncopated stomp. Spacey fire enveloped the screen as Draiman's voice hypnotized on the pulverizing prayer. "Liberate" bounced with an equally heavy kick before "The Infection" took over with another blistering solo from Donegan.

"Are you ready to become the animal?" asked a smiling Draiman right before "The Animal" from Asylum. The song volleyed between vicious and vibrant as Disturbed's curled into attack mode. Live, the band zeroes in on each groove perfectly, conjuring the perfect middle ground between Faith No More and Iron Maiden with an unnerving prowess all their own. "Inside the Fire" and "Warrior" engaged an onslaught of fist-pumping. Then there was "Another Way to Die". Eerie guitars caved into a propulsive beat that saw Draiman reaching vocal heights only gods of the genre have attained.

"Stupify" was an impeccable symphony of destruction as an orchestral chorus tied into the chaotic rhythmic maelstrom. Everything culminated on "Down with the Sickness". The audience mirrored Draiman's timeless intro howls as the song exploded into one final cathartic expulsion of metallic energy.

There's no place like Disturbed's Asylum, and it makes for one awe-inspiring metal show.
