After several days of collective bargaining, the NFL players association has decided to decertify in order to take the NFL owners into court, and form a collective bargaining agreement through litigation. In result, NFL owners have locked out their players, and there may not be football this coming fall.
The lawsuit filed will officially be Manning, Brady, and Brees vs. The NFL. NFLPA director Demaurice Smith claims that the reason for filing the lawsuit was the NFL's failure to provide the union with important, financial information so that they would be able to negotiate on even ground. They filed the lawsuit in the state where Judge Doty, who has ruled in favour of the players several times, presides.
For football fans wondering, there will be no offseason team activities, free agency, or payments made to NFL players until some agreement has been made. There will be, however, an NFL draft in April regardless of any situation. The lawsuit could result in the blocking of a lockout, which would mean football this season, but could also result in many months of litigation between owners and players. As of right now, it is the opinion of most that the lockout will not last longer than into the second week of the NFL season.
