What's disturbing the guitarist for Disturbed right this second?

"All these natural disasters; I'm not a paranoid person, but all these catastrophes just seem to be getting bigger. It's pretty frightening," shuddered Dan Donegan. For the uninitiated, Disturbed is a dark and twisted band of nu-metalheads made up of Donegan, Mike Wengren (drums), David Draiman (vocals) and John Moyer (bass). Atmospheric storytellers, they opine cryptically about werewolves and the disturbing nature of social conformity, favouring syncopated riffs and black, mesmerizing hooks.

With over 11 million albums sold worldwide and four consecutive albums debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, it's fair to say that their glowing-eyed, maniacally grinning mascot, "The Guy," stands proud among famed metal mascots like Iron Maiden's Eddie and Megadeth's Vic Rattlehead.

Donegan's a family man who's currently listening to Valdy and Art of Dying, and watching classic cinema ranging from Silence of the Lambs to Fast Times at Ridgemont High. That is, when he's not rocking the world with tracks like Pain Redefined, Indestructible and Asylum.

With all these tsunamis and exploding nuclear reactors in the world, these guys aren't lacking in the dark-and-twisted inspiration department. Still, keeping things fresh is a collaborative effort: "Once everyone adds their part, the song evolves from a riff. It's inspiring to me to see it through (to the finished product). We keep pushing each other to evolve sonically and as writers."

Also headlining on The Monster Energy Music as a Weapon V Tour: KoRn. The first band ever to be labelled "nu-metal," Korn is instantly recognizable by even casual fans of the genre for tracks like Freak on a Leash, Blind and Twisted Transistor. Atlanta rockers Sevendust and street metal from Stillwell will complete the bill.

What does Disturbed have to say about touring with KoRn? Donegan, a self-confessed "huge fan," says that the boys from Bakersfield have cleaned up their act since the old days. "They keep to themselves. They've been touring since the early '90s and I'm pretty sure they're all clean now: not drinking or anything. We hang out and party a little bit more. They probably stay away from the temptation."

That's not, however, the case with every band. "Pantera was known for their after-show parties. It was unbelievable. We were new and hesitant, like, 'Are we allowed to go here with Vinnie Paul and Dime Bag?' But after every show there was a party going on with those guys."

Considering Disturbed's seriously dark and serious rep, we had to ask Donegan: What's the cutest thing you ever saw in your whole, entire life? Lighting up for a minute, he responded from the heart. "Babies, especially my daughter. Aww. I love being around little kids."

From the guy that brought the world such a boatload of twisted tracks, that's pretty darn sweet.
