1 2011 Grammy Speculations on Fri 15 Oct 2010, 09:53

In exactly a month-and-a-half the nominations are going to be announced. Skipping over the dance/R&B/Pop that usually gets all the focus, this year has been pretty good for metal/hard rock. Let's see if we can guess which albums will be up for nomination (it can only be five total, and the cutoff-time is September 30)

Some likely candidates include:

Jan
Exodus - Shovel Headed Tour Machine (live)

Feb
Meshuggah - Alive (live)
Fear Factory - Mechanize
Dark Tranquillity -We Are The Void

Mar
Down - Diary of a Mad Band (live)
Pantera - 1990-2000: A Decade Of Dominance (compilation)

Apr
Sevendust - Cold Day Memory
Bullet for My Valentine - Fever

May
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Godsmack - The Oracle
Exodus - Exhibit B: The Human Condition
As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise
Soulfy - Omen

Jun
Ozzy Osbourne - Scream
Mastodon - Jonah Hex: Revenge Gets Ugly EP (movie score)

Jul
Hellyeah - Stampede
Korn - Korn III – Remember Who You Are
Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare

Aug
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
Disturbed - Asylum

Sep
Stone Sour - Audio Secrecy

I think Disturbed has gotten heavy enough to warrant inclusion in the metal category, but if they get it they'll have to work for it; Ozzy and Maiden are shoe-ins. Korn has a good mainstream media presence and Nightmare and Diamond Eyes got excellent reviews. And if compilations count, this could be Pantera's last shot at a grammy.

On the other side of things, Stone Sour has gotten softer, so they may end up in the hard rock category. Also, Godsmack has always been nominated as a rock or hard rock band, and this last album won't change that. Basically, if Disturbed stays there then they won't have any trouble at all. Unless Linkin Park somehow get labeled "hard rock" for A Thousand Suns. Then it's hopeless.

God of the Mind
I hope they ARE in the Metal category. They deserve a Grammy. They've been in the industry for ten years now and have gotten little to no recognition. The only recognition they've gotten was for Indestructible for Rock Album of the Year, I think. They guys deserve the big Kahuna of Musical Awards... a Grammy.

It was 4 number-one albums and a nomination for Best Hard Rock song. I don't think Disturbed has the mainstream presence to get nominated for rock album of the year... unless they record an Earth-shatteringly good record (so ridiculously good that it absolutely can't be ignored, kind of like what American Idiot did for Green Day). Basically something on the level of Operation: Mindcrime or Master of Puppets.

I really hope they will be, though.

well last time with inside the fire they were in the hard rock category which is the best chance they have as they cant compete against the mainstream"rock" acts and is unlikely to be even placed in a metal category.

Know what you're going to see at the Grammys? Lady Gaga, Kesha, Miley, Bieber, Beyonce, Eminem, Kings of Leon, Train... precious little hard rock, and NO Disturbed. I'll be very surprised if Asylum (the song) or AWtD gets a nod.

Then again, Disturbed could give a rat's ass about awards. They don't make their music for "the Academy", they make it for US... the fans. Our approval is all they need. And four #1 debuts don't hurt.

disturbed do deserve something for all that they have achieved. It would be nice to see them get something but the way the music industry is these days it's very unlikely. It's like all of a sudden no one gives to shits about metal anymore it's all plagued with this pop music bullshit.

i think that if there's any disturbed album worthy of winning a grammy, it's this one..i mean, so are the others, but this one especially

just like the Oscars, Johnny Depp or Edward Norton never won, but they are so worthy

just like Disturbed

I never took Sting in the Tail, Slash's debut or Hellbilly Deluxe 2 into account (also forgot to mention Black Label Society's Order of the Black). I should mention that the Sept 30th eligibility cutoff time means that albums from Nov and Dec of last year count towards these nominations (dangerous entries include Slayer's World Painted Blood and Mudvayne's self-titled). Worst of all, Metallica has been releasing tons of live albums (Three Nights in Mexico City, Six Feet Down Under Pt 1 and 2, Live at Grimey's) which count; every time Metallica is up for consideration they alway sweep it.

So we're either up against Scorpions and Slash's bunch, or Maiden and Ozzy and possibly Metallica, which is totally hopeless (another confrontation with Rob Zombie is a bit unlikely; his album didn't do that well). All this in mind, I'll throw in my predictions:

Best Metal Performance:
Avenged Sevenfold: Nightmare
Disturbed: Remnants/Asylum
Down: Lifer (live)
Iron Maiden: El Dorado
Ozzy Osbourne: Let Me Hear You Scream

Best Hard Rock Performance:
Deftones: Rocket Skates
Godsmack: Cryin' Like A Bitch
Korn: Oildale (Leave Me Alone)
Scorpions: Raised on Rock
Stone Sour: Say You'll Haunt Me

I'd actually like to Scorpions get a Grammy before they go away forever, considering all their contributions to the genre. It seems that it's already too late for Pantera in that regard (I don't think compilations and Best ofs count).
