David Draiman is a perfect fit for the rally. He has the prototypical look for thousands of the bikers in Sturgis this week — head shaved, biker vest, huge guns … and oh yeah, he has serious pipes. The lead singer for Disturbed was in great voice Friday night as he and his band rocked the Chip as openers for The Scorpions.

Draiman has the unique ability to growl out his metal rap one moment, and the next he’s spot-on with deep, smooth brooding vocals — two sets of chords in that throat are the only explanation.

The best example was “Another Way To Die”. Draiman’s vocals showed the way for the hammering drums and drilling guitars, his voice bouncing off the hills and echoing back through the Chip village.

Draiman also worked the Friday night crowd, inviting each side of the crowd to sing the profanity in “Stupify” and then throw their fists in the air as he beckoned them “Look in my face, it’s in my soul.” He also encouraged the bikers to step off their Harleys and bounce for “Fear” … check out the start of that track, it’s tough not to bounce.

Disappointments? “Voices” was shaved down into a medley (yeah, the rapid-fire vocals on that track would cripple the best of singers, but man it would have had the crowd bouncing). Also, the band indulged themselves with a cover of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion” which was exactly that: confusing. One moment, they were infusing a little metal into original and trying to shakily trying to make it their own, the next minute it sounded like Draiman was content to simply copy Phil Collins.

Their encore included “Down with The Sickness” including a unique Draiman rant …. followed by “Indestructible.” They left the fans with a salute to our military, an American flag waving on the video screens, and chants of U.S.A. (An odd transition to the German headliners Friday night).

Draiman’s outstanding vocals were the highlight of the show.

Well that's interesting news! That particular date on the Scorpions tour to open for them was a TBA.....wished that would of happened when they were in Las Vegas touring! I got stuck watching Cinderella opening for the Scorps...oh well...it's great Disturbed supported the band.
