1 Disturbed Talks about their upcoming DVD release, “Decade of Disturbed” on Sat 07 Aug 2010, 08:04
When Disturbed’s upcoming release, Asylum, hits the streets on August 31st, there will be something included that fans may not be accustomed to these days, a 75+ minute behind the scenes documentary that encompasses the band’s entire 10 year career. What’s so unique about that you might ask? The documentary will cost nothing, its simply a gift from the band to their fans as a thank you for their loyalty over the past decade.
“We started thinking about this as a band last year when we started writing the record. We knew our 10 year anniversary was coming up and we really wanted to make a gesture to the fans that have supported us along the way”, explains lead singer David Draiman. “The trick was, how could we make this a gift and not charge the fans for it”.
“Our ideal situation was to include a hard copy DVD with every CD purchased. The issue was, the costs involved to make a million DVD’s and expand the packaging on a million jewel cases would have been massive”, says guitarist Dan Donegan. “There was already going to be a significant expense in the actual making of the piece but our record company realized this was a unique situation and worked with us on covering those expenses. We just needed to figure out a way to keep the costs reasonable so we could make this a gift and not something the fans would have to pay extra for.”
The idea that was agreed upon was to post the entire documentary on its own unique website where fans can stream it in high definition, and if they so choose, download the movie onto their computers. With every purchase of the new cd, a download card will be included giving the website address and unique code that will grant access. Once on the website, there will be simple directions on how to either view or download the entire movie. With every purchase through iTunes, the movie will be downloaded onto the customer’s computer the same way the music will be.
“We wanted to make sure it was available to everyone is the simplest of ways”, explains Donegan. “By not being able to include a hard copy DVD with every purchase, we realized fans were going to have to make an effort to see the documentary and we wanted to make sure that process was as easy as possible.”
Although a hard copy DVD of the documentary will not be included on the regular edition of the new album, it will be included on the expanded, limited edition.
“The way that worked out was, there was already going to be a hard copy DVD included included with the limited edition which contained the “Dissected” feature,” says drummer Mike Wengren. “We realized that there was enough room on that DVD to include the Decade of Disturbed documentary along with the Dissected feature, and it could be done at no extra expense.”
When asked what fans could expect from the movie, Draiman had this to say, “It basically tells the story of the band, from its inception to present day. The band has had its share of ups and downs along the way and I think we tried to be as open and honest about all of it as we could. Its very insightful and we hope its something the fans will appreciate”.
