God of the Mind
Chapter 57

Once Brie was finally torn off of the General, she had to be carried from the room because she began crying uncontrollably again. The General followed David to their room as he carried Brie up the stairs.

After setting his wife on the bed, he went back to the door. "Don't you take a hint, mother fucker? She told you the leave three times."

"David, I just wanted to apologize in person about this. I feel responsible for it happening."

"That's because you and the Director ARE responsible for it. You'r the ones that sent him back into the fucking lion's den."

"I can only apologize more, David. I had no idea..."

"Yes, David, and again, I'm very sorry."

David shook hid head. "Deaf ears, General. Now leave before I kick your ass." And with that, he went into his room to sit with his wife.

She had reduced herself to sniffling when he came back in the room. "Hey", she said.

"Hey. How are you feeling?"

"Like a bitch. Did I really just attack the General?"

He nodded. "Yeah, baby, you did. You beat his ass, too."

She chuckled a little. "He should have listened when I told him to go away."

He moved to sit on the bed. "Are you feeling better about what's happened with Matt?"

She thought about it for a moment. "Yes and no."

"How so?"

"Yes in that I've finally accepted it, but no in that I still don't like it and I'm pissed about it. I definitely feel better after beating the shit out of that guy, though." She laid her head on his thigh.

"I'm glad to hear you speaking in more that one or two words at a time. I was afraid that we were going to have to call out a psychiatrist there for a minute." He rubbed her back in useless circles.

"I was that far gone?"

"Shit. No wonder I lost it like that."

"I would have done the same thing if I hadn't been so worried about you. Hell, I almost punched him when I saw him at the door."

"You didn't."

"No, but I really wanted to. I figured I would leave that to you." He laughed.

She pushed up and laid her head on his shoulder. Thank you for taking care of me through all this. I just went into shock..."

He laid a finger against her lips. "Shh, you don't have to thank me. I'm your husband. Your partner. It's kinda in the job description" He kissed her on the top of the head. "Plus, I love you more than anything. What upsets you upsets me. I see you break down like that and I get pissed, but you're always my first priority... always."

God of the Mind
Chapter 58

Brie and David finally went back downstairs and the General was still there. "What are you still doing here?" David asked.

"I wanted to talk to your wife."

Brie took a deep breath. "Get my brother out of that hell hole, then I'll speak to you. Unless you want another ass beating, General, I suggest you leave my sight, or I'm gonna let David beat the hell out of you, and I'm sure that Dan, Mike and John won't try to pull him off. Hell, they might just help him." The men around her started popping their knuckles. "Go free my brother, then we'll talk to you again."

Brie finally tried to eat something after the General left to find away to free Matthew. She nibbled in a croissant that had sausage, egg and cheese on it. David sat and sipped on a cup of coffee as she ate. "Eat all of it and then I'll let you leave the room", he insisted.

"What am I? Three?" she asked after swallowing a small bite. "I'm gonna eat it, David. I'm just taking it slow so that I don't puke. My stomach is still upset."

He laughed, the cup of coffee in front of his mouth. "Well, you could drink a cup of coffee and I'd be satisfied." He took another drink of his coffee.

"Gross." She took a big bite, finishing the sandwich. "There. Happy now?"

He set the coffee cup down on the counter. "A little. You still need to drink that glass of juice." She picked up the glass and chugged it. "Now, I'm happy", he said with a chuckle.

"Good, now I'm gonna go puke". And she ran from the room.

God of the Mind
Chapter 59

The General wasn't able to free Matthew. Brie had accepted that it probably wouldn't happen, but she still gave the General a thorough cussing when he next showed up at the house. She called him every name in the book that could possibly be thought of in English, a few things that only David understood, several things in Spanish, and and a few things in her father's native tongue, Gaelic. David couldn't help but laugh.

As he was escorted from the house, David said, "You're lucky she didn't beat your ass again", then shut the door. He then went to his wife and said. "I'm proud of you, you didn't beat him to shit."

She smiled softly at him. "Well, I have a reason that I didn't beat the hell out of him." She wrapped her arms around his waist.

"Oh, and why is that?" He pulled her against him.

"Because, I'm pregnant", and she kissed him.

A couple more months pass and the Utopian government put Matt on trial. Dan was the first to find out and he called David and Brie downstairs. "They're televising your brother's trial, Brie. I'm so sorry."

"If he's smart he won't say anything. They're going to put him to death anyway", Mike said, then looked at Brie. "I'm sorry, sis. I shouldn't have said that. I was out of line."

"It's okay, Mikey. I've accepted it. David and I have decided if it's another boy, we're going to name him Matthew James after my brother."

"What if it's a girl?" Dan asked, watching the proceedings of Matt's trial.

"Madison Jade. It's something to deflect from the Hebrew theme we have going here. Malachai, Jacob, Jordan, David, and Brielle. We need something a little more American I think", David said.

"Is Tiffany coming back to be the midwife?" Dan asked.

Brie and David looked at each other. "Tiffany was hung for treason a year ago, Danny. She was brought in on trumped up charges with bogus evidence", Brie said. "But, we found another midwife and she should be here any minute now."

"Well, I hope she's as good as Tiffany, because she's going to have to move in here around the fifth month", Mike said, "judging by how big you got last time."

"I was carrying triplets until the end of the second trimester, Mikey. I was supposed to be big."

As Mike opened his mouth to respond, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it", Mike said.

It was the gophers with the weekly grocery delivery and a copy of the days Resistance newspaper. "Thanks, kids. You guys are doing great." Mike handed them each a fifty dollar bill.

One of them, a girl by the name of April, asked, "Is that really Ms. Brie's brother that the Utopians are putting on trial?"

"Yeah, it is."

"Man, that's rough. And she's pregnant now too?" said one boy named Aaron.

"Can't be good for her stress level", said the other boy who they all called "Rex". He had kind of taken on the task of being the gopher leader. "I know that if my girlfriend were pregnant and under this kind of stress, I'd go apeshit."

"David already has. Hell, both of them have. She beat the shit out of the General."

"No, she didn't!" April said in shock.

"Yes, she did", David said when he walked to the front door. He grabbed the newspaper from Mike. "He took it like a man though." David went back to the couch and waited with his wife for the midwife to arrive.

The cover story of the newspaper was about Matt. David saved that for last. He wanted to find out about the progress of the Resistance. He was in the middle of yet another writing cycle and he needed the news so he knew what to write about.

Not long after the gophers left, the midwife showed up. Her name was Deborah. She was a sweet older lady who was a staunch supporter of the cause. David had read many of her speeches from different rallies against the Utopians. He thought her to be inspirational. "Well, hello Mr and Mrs. Draiman. It's a pleasure to finally meet the two of you." She extended her hand.

David took her hand. "And it's an honor to finally meet you", he said.

She smiled. "Don't be ridiculous, boy. I'm almost old enough to be your mother. It can't be that big an honor."

"On the contrary", Brie said, "It makes it that much more the honor. David and I both admire your work in the Resistance."

"Well, I admire the both of you. You're both strong and active and firmly believe in the cause. I've seen some of the under ground tapes of your monologues, Mr. David. They are very impassioned and mean a lot to the men and women fighting this retarded war."

What would really surprise everyone is if Matt was freed because someone came forward to provide evidence that the Utopians are just plain wrong. Maybe one of those kids in this last chapter has something...?

Just a thought.

I'll shall take it into consideration. It's a really good idea. Maybe one of them can dig something up, but the evidence is kinda stacked against him. I'll see what I can come up with.

God of the Mind
Chapter 60

The trial dragged on. The Prosecution was dragging it out with motions and other stupid crap. They were trying to find evidence to crucify him with.

"This is bullshit!" John said one day as they watched the trial.

"Oh, I know", said Dan. "They're wanting documents that they're never going to find. That shit's all been destroyed."

"I hope that the bastards end up eating the end of a fucking rifle once they fail to get a conviction", Mike said.

Brie laid her head on David's shoulder. "Rumor has it that the gophers have made it their mission in life to see that he's released. They're looking for evidence that will prove Mattie's innocence", she said.

"Not at our request", David said with his head buried in the most recent edition of the newspaper. "We never made that request. But, I will say this. I'm going to send a message out to our friend the Major in my monthly monologue. It's going to be a message of hope, letting him know that he'll get out of this mess one way or another."

"Well, from what I hear," John chimed in again, "the Director has his top attorneys on the case working around the clock to get Matt freed, but the evidence just isn't there."

"Still got your ear to the ground after three years under fucking ground, Johnny?" Brie asked.

"You better believe it."

As the trial progressed, the Disturbed family watched in suspense. Everytime Matt would be addressed by the court officials as Sergeant Cartwright, he would tell them that he would be addressed as Major Levenstein or have nothing further to do with the proceedings. The adults would all howl in celebration when he did this.

The next day, he didn't show up to court. His attorney said, "My client is continually insulted by the court and has decided not to participate in these proceedings any further.

Brie looked at everyone. "Mattie's got something up his sleeve, I know it".

"What do you think he's up to?" Tina asked from her perch behind Mike.

"I'm not sure yet, but I'm sure we'll find out soon."

Not even the guards knew what he was up to. Not the Utopian guards anyway. The Resistance Loyalists saw what he was doing and said nothing. He would sit in the corner of his cell for hours on end and just watch. He job in the Corps. was just sniping people. He was Recon. He gathered intelligence. The Utopian guards didn't catch a thing, but the Loyalists did and some even helped him. One had slipped hi a guard rotation schedule with his tray at dinner one night. Matthew would spend hours on end, even when he was supposed to be sleeping, studying the guard rotation schedule and waiting for him moment and none of them would be any the wiser.

Well, babygirl, and then....

Chapter 61

One night about three months into Matthew's refusals strike, there one of the gophers came banging on the door. Thankfully, David and Brie were still up. She was having trouble sleeping. His philosophy was if she didn't sleep, neither did he.

David answered the door.

"WE'VE GOT IT!!!" the kid exclaimed. Brie's ears perked up.

"You've got what, boy?" David asked.

"The piece of evidence that will get your brother- in - law's case overturned and thrown out, Mr. David", the kid whispered to David.

David ushered him in. "What do you have, son?" David asked after he had the boy take a seat.

"Mr. David, my name is Marcos", the boy said.

"Right, I'm sorry. No sleep is catching up to me. What do you have, Marcos?"

The boy pulled a long manilla envelope out of his backpack. "Ok, Mr. David, you know you're brother- in- law's alias is Maj/ Francis Kevin Leavenstein, right?"

Brie, about four months pregnant, sat up. "BOY, you better get to the point before I throw something at you!"

"I'm sorry Ms. Brie." The boy handed the envelope to David. As David opened the envelope, the boy explained. "OK, so, we gophers have been doing a lot of digging, thank God for the internet. The piece of paper in your hand is a copy of an actual birth certificate, all kinds of orders issued to and from the Major up until a few years ago. The guy was in Afghanistan and went MIA. And didn't resurface until the Agency set up the false identity for your brother- in- law. The real guy was found, but it was never reported. TACT is a REAL agency that is a part of the Pentagon. The guy was working there your brother- in- law came along. They switched identities. You're Matthew's cover story is so good because it's TRUE!!! The REAL Major Leavenstein was happy to switch ranks with a corporal because he wanted out. They had JUST had the guy's retirement party the day that Matthew showed up at your door."

David blinked. "WOW!" It wasn't often that David was rendered speechless, but when it did happen, it was indeed a miracle. "This just might work, if we can convince Matt to participate in his defense again. I'll make it a point to mention it in my monologue to the Resistance when I tape it tomorrow."

For the first time in a couple of months, Brie felt hope for her brother. She and David exchanged a look. "Do you think you can convince him, David?"

"I'll try, but baby, I can't make any promises."

God of the Mind
Chapter 62

Tonight was the night, Matthew thought to himself. His attorney had said that his defense wasn't going so great because he wasn't there to participate. There had been no messages from the band and he didn't expect there would be. David made it perfectly clear that the band and the Agency would have to deny any knowledge of him should he get caught, but he also knew that his sister wouldn't accept that. She probably had people working day and night on this futile case. But, there was no point. No matter what evidence they might find, it wouldn't convince this corrupt ass court that he was innocent... even though he wasn't. He had been guilty of a lot of things, and espionage and treason we up there on that list when he decided to take the assignment.

The coast was clear. One of the Resistance loyal guards, the same guy that had given him the guard schedule, had left his cell unlocked in case he decided to give it a shot tonight. He knew which guards he could trust and which ones he couldn't. The ones he couldn't would have to die.

He had his K- bar concealed under the pant leg of his green jump suit. It looked too Army for his taste, but it was what they issued him when they locked his ass up in this fucking joint unjustly. He had JUST been released from custody at the Agency when he got arrested here. What the FUCK was happening to this fucking world?

One of the Loyalists guards gave him the signal that they had set up. The coast really was clear on all sides of the building. Matthew slowly creeped from his cell. He carefully snuck down the hall, crouched low so that the lights that kept sweeping the prison didn't catch his movement and trigger that GOD AWFUL alarm. Too many had tried and failed where he would succeed. If he didn't, he woudl die trying. They'd have to kill him then, because there was no way he'd be brought back to this hell hole alive.

He reached the end of the hall and slid the key card that another Loyalist guard had fabricated for him. The door slowly swung open. Thank God it worked or that was another guard that would have to die, Loyalist or not. If the card hadn't worked, then the bastard was a traitor to the cause and deserved to die. This was Matt's thought as he snuck through the door. He pulled his K- bar from under his pant leg and concealed it against his arm. He wasn't a fucking Gunny for nothing. Hell, he left boot camp as a damn Lancy. There was a reason he'd had the career he did.

One of the Utopian guards spotted him, but Matt dispatched of him quickly. He kept that K- bar sharp for just such purposes. He stripped the body and took his weapons. He was going to need them to get out of this mess, he already knew it. He put the uniform on and left the jumpsuit laying on the ground next to the body. He didn't have the time to redress the poor fucker. He had to get to his sister and David.

Another corner, another guard to kill. That was two counts of murder that would go on his rap sheet should he be recaptured, but he didn't plan on getting captured again. He would either get out of this living hell, or die trying. There was no other way around it.

A total of five guards died before he got to the fence. The Loyalists had dug him a tunnel, saying the it was to check a leaky water line to the prison. God, these fuckers were cleaver, and the hole was deep too. He slid in and climbed out with the greatest of ease and crept off into the night.

When morning rolled around, Brie and David were laying in bed. David was doing his favorite task of watching his beautiful pregnant wife sleep. Something about the first part of the second trimester always did that to her, he had no idea why.

"David, are you awake?" Mike whispered from outside the door.

"Yeah, Mikey, come on in."

Mike opened the door. "I have news on Matt."

"Should I wake Brie?"

"Yeah, you probably should. She'll want to hear this too."

David woke her gently. "Brie, baby, wake up for a moment. Mike has news on your brother."

Brie opened her eyes slowly and smiled when she saw David's face. "Hey," she whispered.

"Hey. Good morning beautiful. Mikey's got some news on your brother."

Brie pushed up on to the pillows. "What's going on, Mikey?"

"Matt's escaped. He has two full scale man hunts looking for his ass. Apparently, he killed five of the guards at the prison he was being held in while making his great escape. They want to add murder to his charges if they catch him again."

God of the Mind
Chapter 63

"Well, I'm awake now. I kinda needed another couple of hours, but I guess I'll take a nap later."

"Go back to sleep, baby", David said. "We'll deal with this when wake up again."

"'saint happenin'", Brie said. "Mikey's news on Mattie snapped me awake."

David took a deep breath. "Ok. I would prefer that you tried to get some more rest, but if you can't get back to sleep now, you WILL take a nap later. No questions asked."

"And miss the important day that we have ahead of us?"

David tried to think of what she was talking about, and drew a blank. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Don't tell me that you forgot today is your son's birthday, David Michael. I'll have to beat you", she said with a smile.

"Oh, shit, that's right. It's Malachai's birthday today, isn't it?"

"Yep, our boy is turning eight today."

"Holy fuck. Now, I feel old." He laughed and rubbed his hands over his face.

"We need to go tell our oldest happy birthday. Let's get up."

"But I don't wanna", David joked. "I thought I was a grown- up."

"Either we go tell him, or he's gonna come in here and jump on us."

"Shit. God damn it! Fine." He began to untangle himself from her when the door opened again to the child in question. He got a running start and jumped right in the middle of the bed.

"GOOD MORNING MOM AND DAD!!!" the boy exclaimed.

"Morning, Malachai. What's got you so excited this morning?"

"Dad, you don't play stupid very well, so don't try", Malachai said.

"I'm not playing stupid. I have no idea why you'd be so excited to turn eight years old. I wasn't."

"You lie!"

"No, son, I'm not."

"Yeah, he is", Brie whispered to Malachai. "I talked to Uncle Ben about it a week ago and he said that your dad was a total annoyance when he turned eight."

"When did you hear from Ben?" David asked her.

"A week ago. He called me to see how every one was doing."

David nodded. "Ok. You told him we're all doing well?"

"Yeah, he can't wait to meet his niece and nephews."

"We can't wait to meet Uncle Ben, either." Malachai said. "Now, get up. Aunt Tina is making my birthday breakfast and you two HAVE to eat with me!"

God of the Mind
Chapter 64

David and Brie finally made their way downstairs as Tina was serving breakfast. "Ah, I see the proud parents have finally emerged", Tina said with a huge grin.

"Yes, we have, but do I WANT to be up right now? No, I was sound asleep before Mikey came and told me the news", Brie said as she sat down at the table.

"So you know that your brother go out?"

"Yeah. Am I suprised? No, not really. Am I upset that he killed people? Not sure yet. I want to hear his side of the story first."

"Mom", Malachai said, "I made a birthday wish last night that Uncle Matt would get out of jail, and my wish came true!"

"Good for you, 'Chai." She mussed his hair.

"Hey, Dad, can Uncle Mikey cut my hair into a Mohawk for my birthday?"

David pinched the bridge of his nose. "Geez! Mike! Really? A mohawk? Why?"

"He asked."

"I haven't even had my coffee yet." He turned to Malachai. "Let me get woke up first, then I'll give my answer. Okay, son?"

Malachai thought about it for a moment. "OK!" he said in a exasperated tone. "But, Dad, remember. I asked last year to shave my head bald, and you said no. You owe me."

"Just a few more miles, Matt. You can do this. The house is just ahead", Matthew kept saying to himself as he ran. He'd had no sleep, but you can sleep when you're dead. That was the Marine Corps. way of life. He leg was throbbing from where the scouting party that spotted him had shot him, but that didn't matter. Pain was weakness leaving the body. He had to keep telling himself this to make himself keep moving. There was no turning back. As David said in "Down with the Sickness", they'd woken up the demon. They had brought this on themselves. "They should never have backed me into the corner. I come out swinging."

And still he ran. Just over the hill, he spotted his destination. There were people there who would help him, because they knew who he REALLY was. Not the facade that he'd had to put on, but the real man that was inside his chest.

And still he ran.

As the Disturbed Family sat and ate their breakfast, someone pounded on the door. The men all went on high alert, grabbing pistols that they'd hidden in various places throughout the house. Dan was the one they'd designated to open the door should something like this happen. The guys all crept carefully into the living room and Dan opened the door, and caught the man that was on the other side as he fell.

"MATT!" David yelled. "Mikey, call for the Doctor."

Mike moved with the quickness to the emergency phone that they had installed only two months before. It was a direct line to the Agency's medical unit. "We need a doctor, stat." and he hung up. "There should be a doctor here any minute now", Mike said as he shut the door behind Dan and David.

"Good. He's lost a lot of blood", David said. He looked at his brother- in- law. "What the hell were you thinking?"

"Had to get out. They weren't going to let me go, no matter what", he whispered, his throat dry.

David nodded. "We've all been rooting for you, Matt. Now, conserve your strength and wait for the doctor. I'm going to go tell your sister that you're alive."

Matt nodded and coughed. "Tell her not to worry. I covered my trail quite well."

David nodded and left Matt laying on the couch.

God of the Mind
Chapter 65

"HE'S WHAT?!" Brie shouted when David told her about Matt.

"He's been shot in the leg. We have a doctor en route as we speak, and I'm sure your friend the General is going to come along for the ride.

"If he dies, I'm going ape shit on the General, pregnant or not. That man WILL feel my wrath."

"Brie, I'm begging you, for the sake of our unborn child, don't. Let me handle it. I have more than enough reason to beat the hell out of that man."

"Besides, Brie", Nicole said, "you've already beat the shit out of him. Let the guys have their fun now. It will be a huge blow to his ego."

"Not a huge a blow as getting his ass kicked by a pregnant woman", Brie said. "Nothing is worse than that."

"But, honey, you were already pregnant when you beat his ass the first time. You're about five months pregnant. It was four months ago that you beat him to shit", David said. "You've already achieved that goal."

Brie took and deep breath and let it out with a shudder. "Fine. You can handle it. Just make sure that Mike, Dan, and John get me out of the room before I loose my cool and end up losing the baby."

"Will do, now eat some breakfast and drink that juice. That's not a request."

She huffed. "FINE." She sat down and ate her breakfast.

David was standing at the door when the medical team arrived with the General in tow. "How is he?" the General asked when he walked in the door.

"Hello to you too, General. Matthew is weak and has lost a lot of blood. He was shot on his run here by a scouting party of Utopinaists that was looking for him."

"Offer my condolences to your wife, please, David. I'm sure she doesn't want to see my face right now."

As David opened his mouth to answer, Brie stepped into the room. "You're right, I don't and yet here you are, mother fucker", she said.

"I am sorry, Mrs. Draiman."

"Take your apology and stick it up your ass", she said. She walked over to David and kissed his cheek. "Baby, I'm going to lay down for a while. Keep me apprised of what's going on."

"Of course." He kisses her chastely on the lips, then she left the room. "If my wife looses this baby because of all the stress that you and the other assholes at the Agency have put her through, I'm holding you personally responsible, General", David said, then went to go see how Matt was doing.

The Doctor didn't look happy. "The wound is too dirty to tell how extensive the damage is, and I'm afraid to clean it because I don't want to cause him anymore pain than necessary", he said.

"Doctor, this man is a Marine. 'Pain is weakness leaving the body', is his motto. Clean the fucking wound, or if I have to, I'll go get the Everclear from the liquor cabinet and do it myself. Make up my mind, Doctor."

"Are you related to this man?" the Doctor asked David.

"He's my brother- in- law. My wife has authorized me to make all decisions concerning him on her behalf."

The Doctor nodded. "As next of kin, I have to honor your request. I'm going to have to get him started on a transfusion and IV fluids as soon as I get the wound debreeded and closed. He's hanging by a thread."

"Then do it, Doctor. Save this man's life. He's a fucking hero of the cause and the first to escape from the prison facility in Denver."

The Doctor's eyes grew wide. "This... THIS is Matthew Cartwright?"

"Yes, Doctor, and he's my brother. SAVE HIM!"

God of the Mind
Chapter 66

There was too much going on for her to relax. Too much going on in her head, too much going on in the house... just too much. She turned on the TV and put in a movie to try and relax. The movie wasn't the best one in the world, but it helped her settle down most of the time.

As she lay in bed watching the movie, she started to drift. Her mind finally let go off all the shit that was going on and she nodded off to sleep.

"The wound is clean, but the bullet is still lodged in his leg. I'm going to have to cut his leg open to remove it. I need to transport him to our Medical Facility to do it. This isn't a sterile enough environment", the Doctor explained to David.

David stood up and started to pace, rubbing his head. "For the love of God!" he growled. "It's my son's birthday, for crying out loud. I shouldn't have to be doing this."

Malachai came into the room and hugged David around the waist. "Dad, what would Mom say about it?"

"I don't know, son. What the hell are you doing in here any way? This is not something that is fit for an eight year old boy to see."

"Dad, I'm not afraid of death. I'm not afraid of seeing death. I'm in here to support you. You looked like you needed a hug, so I came and gave you one. Anyway, I'm not the twins. They don't understand this stuff. I do. I know that bad things happen to good people."

David smiled down at his son. "When did you get to be so smart?"

"The tutors that the Agency sends for us school aged kids. I've been getting smarter every day for the past three years. But you have a decision to make, and I don't think it's one you can make without Mom."

David opened and closed the door quietly. "She's resting, I shouldn't wake her." He thought to himself as he walked further into the room. She looked so angelic laying there, her stomach sticking out, ripe with his child. He almost wondered if this is what the "Virgin Mary" looked like when she was carrying the alleged Messiah. His own words came to mind, "Waiting for your modern Messiah", the words from Liberate. Funny, but that seemed to be how people looked at him, like the modern Messiah come to take away all the hatred. "I'm just a man", he thought. But that wasn't the matter at hand. The matter at hand was whether to wake his personal savior from her slumber to ask for her help. Malachai was right. He couldn't decide this on his own. He sat on the edge of the bed and brushed a lock of hair from her face, trying not to wake her.

But, she felt his presence. She reached up and caught his hand, trapping it between hers and her face. "What's the matter?" she whispered as she rubbed her cheek against his palm.

"Matt needs to be transported to the Agency's Medical facility in order to have the bullet removed from his leg. I didn't want to wake you, but I needed your advice."

"Then let them do it, David", she said as she opened her eyes.

"Ok." He took a deep breath through his nose. "You know, I don't say it a lot, but I love you. You've saved me more times that I can count."

She smiled. "I know, David, and I love you too. You continually save me, everyday." She kissed his palm. "Now, go tell the Doctor that if he needs to move Matthew, then he should do it."

"Doctor", David said as he reached the bottom of the stairs.

"Yes, Mr. Draiman?"

"If you feel you need to move him, then do it, discreetly. Keep his identity as secret as you possibly can. By now, the scouts have reported him as dead to the Utopian leaders and they're calling it a victory. I want them to keep thinking that for a while."

"Not a problem, Mr. Draiman. His secret is safe with me."

"I'm gonna hold you to that, Doctor. I want a phone call after you get him out of surgery updating me on his condition. I mean, the MOMENT he's out of surgery."

"Absolutely. With out a question", the Doctor said, then signaled for his assistants to get Gunny Cartwright ready for transport.

God of the Mind
Chapter 67

The Disturbed Family continued with their celebration of Malachai's birthday, though the celebration was somber. Everyone that knew what was going on with Matt was worried about him, especially David and Brie.

David was starting to get pissed. He told the Doctor to call him the MOMENT he got out of surgery with Matt. There was no way it too this fucking long to remove a damn bullet, unless... he didn't dare think it. He looked at the face of his wife and knew she was thinking the same thing. The bullet severed his femoral artery. Fuck, he shouldn't have thought it, but it was too late for that now. The thought crossed his mind.

While they were cutting the cake, David's phone rang. "Hello?"

"Mr. Draiman, this is the Doctor."

"Hello, Doctor. How is my brother- in- law?"

"Stable, but gravely critical. The bullet is out, but we had to fight to get the bleeding to stop. The bullet knicked his femoral artery. It wasn't severed, but it was badly damaged."

David let out a sigh of relief. "But he's going to be ok?"

"Too early to tell. You told me to call you the moment I got him out of surgery, and that's what I've done. He's still in Recovery. I will keep you posted, you have my word."

"I believe you, Doctor. So far, you're the only person in the Agency who's given me his word and kept it."

"Well, Mr. Draiman, I'm in the business of saving lives, not taking them. I've taken a special interest in your brother- in- law's case because of who you told me he is. The man really is a hero, not just of the cause, but of our country as we used to know it."

"Yes, Doctor, I know. I've had the pleasure of reading his file."

"Then you know the hell he went through in Iraq."

"Yes, Doctor, I know."

"Well, Mr. Draiman, I know you and your family are celebrating your eldest son's birthday. Tell him Happy Birthday for me, that his Uncle Matt is alive and well."

"I will. Again, thank you, Doctor."

"No problem. Good bye. I'll call you again in a few hours after he's awake."

The eyes of every adult in the house were on David as he put his phone back in his pocket. "He's stable", he said and they all let out a collective sigh.

"Thank God!" Kristen said. "I'm glad he's going to be alright."

"Well, it's too early to tell from what the Doctor said. He's critical at the moment, but resting comfortably."

"But the bullet is out?" Nicole said, one arm around Dan's waist.

"Yes, the bullet is out. It tore open his femoral artery. That's what took the Doctor so long to call. They were wrestling with the blood loss."

"I hope he's going to be alright", Tina said, clinging to Mike.

Brie wrapped her arms around David and gave him a gentle squeeze, "There you go, saving me again", she whispered in his ear. Out loud to the group she said, "He will be. My brother is a fighter. He's not going out without one HELL of a fight."

God of the Mind
Chapter 68

"Alright, birthday boy, you've stayed up long enough", David said to Malachai. "It's officially time for you to go to bed."

"But, Dad, I'm not tired. Five more minutes."

"Now, Malachai. I mean it."

Malachai let out a huff. "Fine." As he want for the stairs, he caught his reflection in the mirror, then turned back to his Dad. "Thanks for letting Uncle Mikey shave my hair into a mohawk. It looks really cool."

David smiled. "You were right, I owed you from last year. But, don't make it a habit to want your hair in funky styles, or I'll make sure that you see a bald head as punishment."

"Dad, there's no way in the world I'd see being bald as punishment. You're bald."

"At my own choice and I was in my twenties before I shaved my head for the first time. No, get your butt in bed."

"Yes, sir." Malachai said and headed up the stairs.

David almost responded, but he was still in shock. Did he just address me as "sir"? David thought. He shook the thought from his mind. Surely he misheard the boy.

David went into the kitchen where Brie was making herself a small snack. "You okay, baby?" he asked.

"Yeah, honey, I'm fine. I'm a tad worried about Mattie, but I'm sure he'll be fine. He may have to learn to walk again, but he's a survivor."

"That he is. He ran from the holding facility in Denver to here in Grand Junction. That's quite a run alone, but to do at least half of it with a bullet in you leg is quite a feat, if you ask me."

She went to him and clung to his body. "I love you, David Draiman, more than I could possibly verbalize. You've shown me what love really is."

Before he could respond, she'd captured his lips in a passionate kiss. All he could do was hold her against his body and return her passion.

God of the Mind
Chapter 69

Her dreams that night would have been at home in a Disturbed music video. Hell, they were from a Disturbed music video. One song kept playing in her mind over and over again. "For saving me from all they've taken, letting my armor fall again, giving me the strength to face them", the words from the song, The Night. The song had been a single of theirs years ago, but they had more meaning to her at this point in her life, than they did when "Indestructible" first hit record stores. He had saved her more times than she could count or than she even realized over the three years they'd been together. Her armor had fallen for the last time with him and it was going to stay down as long as he wanted her. She loved him with her whole heart, mind, body, and soul.

Little did he know, but they were having the same dream. The video for The Night was playing in his mind. She was his strength, his heart, his inspiration, the reason he got up in the morning and did the things he did. She was the reason he did the monologues, because she inspired him, he wanted to inspire the masses that were standing and raising their fists against the Utopians. "In a world beyond controlling, are you gonna deny the savior in front of your eyes?" His own words now applied in his life. Funny how irony liked to fuck with him.

Matt was choking on the tube down his throat when he came to. His stats spiked and the nurses ran into his room. "Matthew, we need you to calm down. We're going to remove the breathing tube now. We thought we'd lost you there", one nurse said to him as she worked on getting the obstruction out of his throat.

When the tube was out, he coughed, then in a gruff voice, he asked, "Where am I?"

"You're at the Agency's Medical Facility. You're going to be fine. We had to remove you from the Disturbed home so that we could operate."

"My sister?"

"She knows, Matthew. Mr. Draiman assured us that she knows of his decision to have you brought here. He said it was a tough call, but it was in your best interests to have you brought in so we could operate and get that bullet out of your leg or you would have slowly bled to death."

Matthew nodded. "Water, please". The nurse handed him the cup and let him drink. After his parched throat had been moistened, he asked. "Can you call David for me in the morning? I want to thank him for saving my life."

"No problem, Matthew. For now, you need to rest and regain your strength."

He nodded and we back to sleep. "Power beyond containing, are you gonna remain a slave for the rest of your life? Give into the night." That's what he did, he gave in.

God of the Mind
Chapter 70

David's phone rang bright and early at 8:00am. He reached over to his bedside table and grabbed it. "Hello?" he asked sleepily

"David?" the tenor voice said.

"Yeah, who's this?"

"I know I sound like shit, man, but don't you recognize the voice of your brother- in- law when you hear it?"

David sat up a little. "Oh, hey Matt. How are you feeling?"

"Like hell, but I wanted to say thank you."

"For what, bro?"

"Saving my ass."

"Believe me, it was my pleasure. Your sister never would have forgiven me if you had died and I could have saved you. I like getting laid, you know what I mean?"

"Is she even giving you any right now? I know she's pregnant and all."

"The first and second trimesters are awesome. Whenever I want it, I get it." David laughed.

"That's cool. I need to find a woman like her. She's an inspiration, isn't she?"

"That she is. I tell her that every chance I get, but she doesn't believe me."

"She's too fucking modest, that's why. Keep trying, you might get her to believe you some day."

"I will not be detoured. I will make her believe me one day. She just doesn't know it."

"Good for you, brother. Hey, can you tell 'Chai happy birthday for me. I know I missed it yesterday."

"Not a problem, and the only reason you missed it is because you were bleeding to death."

"Yeah. Is there any cake left?"

"Maybe a piece or two, why?"

"I want it when I get back."

David laughed. "Sure thing, bro. I'll tell Malachai and I'm sure hell stand constant vigil over it to make sure that you get it and no one else... unless it's his mother. Then you're shit out of luck."

"And I'll find myself stupified, coming back again", Matt said with a hoarse laugh.

David laughed with him. "Well, Matt, I'd love to chat some moree, but your energy needs to be on getting well, and I need to make sure that your sister and niece and nephews eat something."

"No problem. I'll call back later and chat some more. This place is really fucking boring, just so you know."

"I'm sure it is, just like any hospital."

"Worse", Matt said and hung up.

David leaned over and kissed Brie on the temple. "Good morning, sleepy head", he whispered.

"Go to hell, butt munch", she whispered back. "I'm not getting up until I'm damn good and ready. My sleep is being interrupted too damn much."

He laughed. "That's fine. I was just saying good morning." He settled back into bed next to her and wrapped an arm around her waist, his hand resting on the bump in her abdomen. He felt a thump under his hand. "Brie, did you feel that?"

"Yeah, I feel it all the time. I've got a fucking soccer player in my womb." She rolled into her back.

He scooted down and laid his head on her stomach. The joy in his eyes was undeniable. It affirmed to him that there really was a baby in there. His baby. "Hello, in there", he said. "This is your Daddy speaking. We can't wait to meet you for the first time, little Maddie."

She smiled. It was too cute. "You've decided it's a girl?"

"Yep. It's got to be."

"And why do you say that?"

"Because I said it's a girl."

God of the Mind
Chapter 71

A couple of months passed. Matt had to undergo extensive physical therapy for the gunshot wound he received, and after two and a half months in the hospital, the Doctor allowed him to go "home", where ever that was for him now. The day he was released, he called David.

"Hey, David. It's Matt."

"Hey, Matt. What's up?"

"The Doctor said I could go home today."

"Then get your ass here. We've been waiting for you to let us know. You have a room all set up."

"Really? You guys want me to say there?"

"Are you fucking kidding me? Brie, Tina, Kristen, and Nicole all insist that you stay here. Us men have no say in the matter, not that we would have argued anyway. You're family, Matt. You belong with us."

Matt had a lump in his throat. "I don't know what to say, David. Thank you."

"Thank us by getting here. Anything special that you want fixed to eat when you get here?"

"Just something hot that doesn't taste like cardboard."

"Not a problem. Tina and Nicole have pretty much made it their job to cook and clean the kitchen. Kristen and Brie usually clean up the living room. Brie can't bend over anymore, so Kristen does the picking up and Brie runs the vacuum."

"What do you guys do?"

"Help where ever the women will let us."

"Ok, sounds good. Sounds like you've got a well oiled machine over there."

"We try. Oh, by the way, just thought I'd let you know that there's been a young woman over here every other day asking about you. Name's Veronica."

"Ronnie? Really?"

"Yeah, said she's known you for a while and has been worried about you ever since you ended up in prison."

"That's great news, bro, thanks."

"Sure thing, Matt. Just get home now and we'll see you when you get here." David hung up.

I should have known they'd want me there, Matt thought to himself with a smile. As he spun the wheelchair that he'd been stuck in since the day they let him get out of bed around, a nurse came in.

"Did you get a hold of them?" she asked.

"Yeah, I did. Tell transport I'm ready to go home now, Delores, please. I can't stand being here any longer. Not that you ladies aren't all the LOVES OF MY LIFE!" He put on his most charming smile.

"You charmer, you. I can't believe no girl has snatched you up, yet."

"Maybe one will here soon, and if she does, I promise that you will always be the one who had my heart first". He put a hand over his chest.

She shook her head. "Let's get you home. I'm sure you sister is dying to see you."

Dying to see him was a pretty accurate analogy, Matt thought as he wheeled through the door. Brie pretty much pounced on him before he got through the threshold.

"Do they have you walking yet?" she asked as she stood up from damn near smothering him.

"They're trying to get me out of the chair, but the leg won't hold me yet. Do you think in all of you infinite wisdom that you could help me with that problem?"

"I'll put my mind to it and have you some exercises to do the strengthen those quads back up in no time. It's gonna suck like a mother fucker, but if you want to walk again, you have to work at it." As she finished the sentence, her hand flew to her round stomach and she gave a little "ooh".

David was at her side in no time. "Come on, baby, let's get you sat down, then you can talk with Matt."

"Yes, father", she said sardonically.

He laughed her sarcasm off like a pro. He really did know her that well. They'd been together, what, three or four years now, most of that has been cooped up in this house. He'd had plenty of time to get to know her, Matt thought to himself.

The rest of the "family" greeted him and gave him a hearty welcome home. Dan even pushed him into the kitchen where Nicole and Tina had made his favorite, MEATLOAF! "Brie told us you liked it, but not to this extent. You're eating like you haven't eaten in months", Tina laughed as Matt fixed himself a third plate of food.

"Are you kidding? This is the best damn meatloaf I've ever had!"

"Well, we don't eat a lot of pork around here because David and your sister don't eat it. Some nights, we just have sandwiches because we're tired of everything else."

"Can I ask you lovely ladies something and you'll be completely honest with me?" Matt asked. Nicole and Tina both nodded. "While Brie and I were talking, she experienced a pain of some sort and David flew to her side front out of no where. Is he always like that with her?"

"Oh, yeah. He's very loving and attentive to her. There's not a morning that they don't come down those stairs hand in hand", Tina said.

"Pregnant or not, David's like that with her. He pays so much attention to her that I think that's got OUR husbands thinking that they don't pay enough attention to US. Dan's become more affectionate over the past couple of years from watching David with your sister", Nicole told him.

"So him running to her side like that isn't an act that he's putting on for me?"

"HELL NO!" they said in unison.

"Thanks, ladies. That's all I needed to know."
